Field Trips at Discovery Center

Field trips to the Discovery Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, are exhilarating journeys into the realms of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). Nestled in the heart of Murfreesboro, this center offers an immersive learning experience for students of all ages. From interactive exhibits exploring the wonders of space and technology to hands-on workshops delving into the mysteries of the natural world, each trip sparks curiosity and fosters a love for learning. At Discovery Center, we know that educators have a lot on their plate. We want to be an extension of your classroom and our experienced team can use your interests and grade level to match a field trip experience that will engage your students in up to date TN Science and Computer Science content. Self Guided Field Trips

Self-Guided Tours $9 per student (10 student minimum)

A Self-Guided tour offers your group a chance to explore the Discovery Center at your own pace. After an initial introduction, your group will explore in small, chaperone-supervised groups. Must have 10 or more students to make reservations.

Guided Field Trips

Guided Field Studies $10 per student* (20 student minimum)

Discovery Center provides fun and effective, informal learning experiences that meld with classroom learning. Located adjacent to 25 acres of spectacular wetlands, Discovery Center is full of exciting exhibits and wildlife to explore – both inside and out. The exhibits and staff-led activities are designed to complement the standards-based curriculum. Programs include instructor led field study stations plus Discovery Center exploration. The specific field study content is based on grade level attending.

Mobile Field Trips

$5 per student* ($100 minimum program fee)
($60 mileage fee outside of Rutherford County)

Hands-on lessons presented in your classroom! Mobile Labs: Learning on the Go! is a great way to bring the Discovery Center resources to your classroom or site. Almost all of our guided field trips can be done at your site.

All Mobile Labs are subject to availability depending on staff and equipment required. $60 mileage fee for groups outside of Rutherford County. Most lessons can accommodate a maximum of 40 students at a time. To serve your entire group, we will work with you to create rotations for your group.

Science Assembly

($250 for the first hour and then $100 per hour)
($60 mileage fee outside of Rutherford County)

Prepare to be wowed with our science a la carte offerings. You get to choose two or more physical science experiences tailored to your grade level. This hour-long show works great for crowds of 30 - 100 students and is the most impressive in a gymnasium or auditorium. Experiences include States of Matter, Light, Electricity, Bernoulli’s Principle, and Gyroscopic Forces.

We reserve the right to combine schools to effectively maximize museum space and staff. Group sizes may be limited.

Teachers and school personnel are free with the field study. Chaperones must prepay through the school to receive the chaperone rate. Any chaperones that pay the day of may use their Discovery Center membership for entry or they must pay the regular admission rate.

Cancellations & Late Arrivals: Please call us if you need to change your reservation date. We will do our best to accommodate. If you will be late, please call (615) 890-2300. We honor the time reserved for each group. Your exploration time in the museum may be shortened if you do not arrive at your scheduled time.

Lunch Facilities: Outdoor lunch facilities are available. Discovery Center cannot guarantee indoor lunch facilities. In case of inclement weather, we will do our best to provide you with an indoor lunchroom. Beverages, healthy snacks, and ice cream are available in our gift shop.

A few of our field trips require extra staffing and supplies and are priced to accommodate these needs.

STAR Lab - Our inflatable planetarium requires two educators to set-up and needs a 15x15x15 ft space to inflate at your location. All STAR Lab field trips are $10 per student for both Guided and Mobile experiences.

Dissection Lab - We offer owl pellet dissection starting in kindergarten and frog dissection starting in 3rd grade. We source our materials from Carolina Sciences and typically provide one specimen per 3-4 students. The dissection lab requires two educators and space for dissections. WARNING! While many of our dissections can be done at young ages with dull tools, elementary students tend to make a mess! All Dissection field trips are $15 per student for both Guided and Mobile experiences.

Donation Requests

The Discovery Center supports local nonprofit organizations and educational institutions by donating admission passes. The standard donation is two admission passes valued at $24. Donation Requests are processed monthly, and it may take up to two months for a response depending on your requested event date. One request per organization will be considered per calendar year. Please keep in mind that while each request receives careful consideration, we regret that we are unable to accommodate all requests. All requests must be submitted through the form below. Please do not call, email or mail your requests. You will be emailed if your donation is approved. Donations will be emailed to the email address indicated below prior to the event. Organizations must meet the following guidelines to be considered:

  • Donation requests for charitable events must be in the middle Tennessee area.
  • Organizations benefiting children and education receive priority.
  • Fundraisers to benefit an individual or families are not generally honored.

Young Leaders Council Application

Counselor in Training Volunteer Application

Discovery Center at Murfree Spring is seeking reliable, upbeat and positive youth ages 14 - 17 as summer day camp Counselors in Training (CIT) assisting counselors and educators with children in grades K – 6. CITs will assist day camp counselors and educators in delivering age-appropriate activities and crafts and may assist Discovery Center education staff with programming focused on nature, animals, science and design.
