Discovery Design Time

This week’s Discovery Design Time explores the art of layering in Peculiar Prints, a Monsters in the Museum-themed session all about gelli printing — a modern take on a printmaking tradition that dates back to the mid-1800s. Guests will discover how artists use printmaking to create multiple versions of the same work, and try their hand at the process themselves.

Guests will use a gelli plate and brayer to spread a thin layer of ink or paint, then press cardstock onto the plate to pull a print. From there, they’ll build up additional layers using stamps, leaves, and paper cutouts to create texture and design, repeating the process until their print is complete.

Guests will build new vocabulary like subtractive, registering, brayer, and distribution, while exploring design, technology, and the history of printmaking.

Discovery Design Time is a weekly program held every Thursday at Discovery Center at Murfree Spring — each session features a new theme and activity, so guests can join again and again for a fresh hands-on art experience.
