Discovery Design Time

This Discovery Design Time turns guests into tool testers in Tool Technology, a Science of Everyday Things-themed session exploring the tools humans have used for thousands of years to build, carve, and create. Technology isn’t just phones and computers — it’s any invention designed to solve a problem or make a task easier, and today that means carving tools!

Guests will experiment with flower foam — a lightweight material florists use that’s also perfect for carving — using real tools like palette knives, loop tools, and scrapers. Each tool leaves its own mark: smooth surfaces, removed pieces, or textured cuts. There’s no “correct” sculpture to make; guests are free to create patterns, abstract shapes, or simply explore how each tool interacts with the foam.

Along the way, guests will build new vocabulary like carve, gouge, chisel, and the concept of subtractive vs. additive design, while strengthening fine motor skills through hands-on experimentation.

Discovery Design Time is a recurring monthly program at Discovery Center at Murfree Spring — each session features a new theme and activity, so guests can join again and again for a fresh hands-on art experience.
