Discovery Design Time

This week’s Discovery Design Time gets curious about liquid in Capillary Action, a Science of Everyday Things-themed session exploring why water doesn’t always go where gravity says it should. Liquid molecules love to cling to things with tiny spaces to move through — a phenomenon called capillary action — and guests will see it in action before creating their own fall-inspired artwork.

Guests will outline leaf shapes using glue and salt, mimicking the tiny spaces that let water travel and cling. Then, using liquid watercolor, they’ll watch capillary action pull color along their lines, filling in their leaves with vibrant, natural-looking blends.

Along the way, guests will build new vocabulary like capillary action, matter, and space, while exploring diffusion and the science behind everyday liquids.

Discovery Design Time is a weekly program held every Thursday at Discovery Center at Murfree Spring — each session features a new theme and activity, so guests can join again and again for a fresh hands-on art experience.
